General Information

The following announcement includes major changes to the Forum venue and schedule. These include:

  • Registration Information (abstract submission does not equal registration)
  • Shoemaker Award
  • **IMPORTANT** Venue Change from Previous Years
  • **IMPORTANT** Meal and refreshment changes you want to know about
  • LEAG Meeting Time Change
  • Lightning Round Talks (some slots still available)

The NASA Lunar Science Institute is pleased to announce the 5th annual Lunar Science forum, to be held July 17-19, 2012 at the NASA Ames Research Park. This year's Forum will feature exciting early results from the GRAIL mission, plus in depth results from the LRO and ARTEMIS missions. Plans for the LADEE mission will be discussed, as will a wide variety of topics enabled by scientific investigations of, on and from the Moon.

Virtual Participation

As we are sure most of you know, there have been several travel restrictions placed on all government agencies. In order to accommodate those of you who cannot join us in person at this year's Lunar Science Forum, we will be broadcasting all talks and events live over Adobe Connect. Please note on our agenda (http://lunarscience.nasa.gov/lsf2012/agenda) in which room the talk that you are interested will take place. All plenary talks will be in the "Main" room while parallel sessions will take place in the "Main" and "Side" rooms.

The URL for the Main room is http://connect.arc.nasa.gov/lsf2012m/

The URL for the Side room is http://connect.arc.nasa.gov/lsf2012s/

For those speakers who prefer that we do not broadcast/record their presentations, you will see a placeholder screenshot with no audio available and the online session will resume during the next talk.

We are sorry that you all will not be able to join us this year, but hopefully this new feature of the Lunar Science Forum will allow you to participate at the level you desire.

We hope to see you all in person in 2013!

Registration Information

Submission of an abstract does not register you for the meeting, and we really need everyone to pre-register if possible. There is no cost to register, but it helps our staff tremendously if you pre-register.

Please find registration information at

Forum Logistics:

The 2012 Lunar Science Forum will be extended to three full days with a special plenary session on Thursday that no one will want to miss! Additionally, the Forum will commence with the annual Shoemaker Award Keynote Lecture presented by this year's Shoemaker Award winner, Dr. S. Ross Taylor. Dr. Taylor is being recognized for his significant scientific accomplishments and contributions to the field of lunar science.

The Forum Agenda is posted online at
http://lunarscience.nasa.gov/lsf2012/agenda

Due to government restrictions on conference expenditures, there will be a few changes to the Forum venue this summer. The Forum will now take place in Building N152 on the eastern part of NASA Ames Research Park instead of the Ames Conference Center and associated tent many of you remember. Signs from the Moffett Field front gate will direct you to the new venue location and associated parking. Also, food can no longer be provided free of charge. Lunch tickets for boxed salad or sandwich sets (complete with drink and chips) will be available for purchase on Tuesday morning prior to the start of the forum and during the first coffee break. To reduce congestion at the registration tables, an area dedicated to lunch ticket purchase will be clearly marked. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience these changes cause, but this was the only way to still provide lunch to the Forum participants. Participants may opt to go offsite for lunch and a list of nearby restaurants will be provided. However, the boxed lunches will enable participants to have lunch while they break out into the Focus Groups that will meet each day.

Please note the Lunar Exploration and Analysis Group (LEAG) town hall meeting will be held on Wednesday afternoon (4:30-5:30 p.m.) prior to the poster session. All forum attendees are encouraged to participate.

The "Lightning Talk" portions of the Forum have been scheduled during the plenary sessions. These rapid-fire, 2-minute talks (without slides) provide an opportunity for students (and others) to gain visibility and promote their research. Following the success of a brief preparatory talk last year, all students giving Lightning Talks are strongly encouraged to meet with NLSI Director, Dr. Yvonne Pendleton, on Tuesday morning (7:30 a.m. in Bldg 152 for breakfast) where pointers will be given on how to make their talk as effective as possible. If you are interested in giving a lightning round talk, please email Brad.Bailey@nasa.gov.

Abstract Deadlines

The abstract submission period has closed.

Agenda

The agenda has been posted online:

http://lunarscience.nasa.gov/lsf2012/agenda

Meeting Format

The conference consists of invited and contributed oral and poster presentations, together with breakout sessions to plan for the future of lunar science.

The session summaries, along with the abstracts, list of organizers, and participants, will be included in a final report to be posted on the NASA Lunar Science Institute website.

Oral Presentations

Note to Presenters: If you will be attending our Forum Pre-Registration on Monday afternoon, July 16th, located at the NASA Lunar Science Institute (Building 17), please check in at the Speaker's Set-up Table and drop off a copy of your presentation to our staff (on a thumb drive we can temporarily keep). We recommend using the .PDF format for your presentation, preferably stored on a flash drive you are comfortable handing to someone else for a few hours. We will make sure you get it back, but we may need to keep it as we download the presentations.

If you will not be attending our Forum Pre-Registration on Monday, then please check in at the Speaker's Set-up Room in building 152 (where the conference is being held this year), on Tuesday morning, July 17th, to put your presentation on our computers. All presentations need to be uploaded on Tuesday, if possible, due to the limited staff available to support the meeting. A few exceptions can be made for those arriving later in the week, but it will help us a lot if you can deliver your presentation Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning.

If your presentation incorporates any embedded audio or video, please contact Ricky Guest as soon as possible to discuss the best way to make these work.

Also, your presentation will be recorded in Adobe Connect and posted on the web site for on demand viewing and a .PDF of your presentation will also be made available for download. Please consider this in case you plan to show pre-published results. If you have any questions, please notify us before the Forum and we will do everything we can to accommodate your needs.

Poster Presentations

The space available for poster displays is 48” x 48”. The poster area will be open during all normal meeting hours, so authors may install their poster anytime after 5PM on July 16th. Posters should be removed by 2PM on Thursday. Authors are required to be at their posters during at least one poster session (sign up sheets will be provided at check-in). Poster authors are also encouraged to bring several press-ready copies of their abstract for the media.
